Bilateral ptosis of the eye is not uncommon and has many causes. In general, when there is droopy eyelid on only one side of the face, then one must suspect a nerve injury, stroke or a cancer. However, when there are droopy eyelids on both sides, then one must suspect a generalized medical disorder or aging. Droopy eyelids can make one look ill, sleepy, bored, tired, sad or one may appear not interested. In many cases, when the eyelids are droopy, the eyelashes can constantly irritate the eye and induce tearing, redness and discomfort.

In some people, bilateral eye ptosis occur because of excess skin or fat. The excess fat causes the eyelids to sag and makes the facial appearance unappealing. For some unlucky individuals, droopy eyelids may appear at age 40.

The most common medical disorder associated with bilateral eye ptosis or sagging eyelids is myasthenia gravis, in this medical disorder, the nerves lack a neurotransmitter that causes stimulation of the muscles. The disorder is not very common and usually presents in the 30s or earlier. What should be understood is that in myasthenia gravis one should not seek surgical treatment for the droopy eyelids because there are medications that can help regain normal eyelid function.

In individuals with severe hypothyroidism, bilateral droopy eyelids can also occur. Again, one shouldn’t seek cosmetic surgery to correct the eyelid problem as once the hypothyroidism is reversed, the eyelids will resume their normal anatomical position.

Over the years, many solutions for a drooping eyelid have come and gone. For those who are too poor to afford medical treatment, one can use thin transparent tape to hold the eyelids open. However, continuous tapping of the eyelids can be uncomfortable and does cause dryness of the eyes.

Most people seek help from a plastic surgeon for cosmesis. However, before going to a plastic surgeon, it is essential to know that that condition is not due to myasthenia gravis or hypothyroidism. Cosmetic surgeons have made great improvements in their surgical techniques and can correct a drooping eyelid with excellent results. The surgery essentially involves making an incision and removing the excess skin or fat. The surgery is done as an outpatient and most people have a speedy recovery. However, like all surgeries, blepharoplasty does have complications. If the surgeon is not experienced, the eyelid may be left too short and there may even be nerve damage- both of which are permanent. So prior to seeing any surgeon, one should first know reputation of the surgeon and ask for his or her experience. Moreover, blepharoplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by most medical insurance plans or Medicare. For those who are adamant about plastic surgery for bilateral ptosis of the eye, ask questions and when in doubt get a second opinion.

Horner syndrome facts indicate that this disorder affects the eye and can have several causes. Horner syndrome is a very rare medical disorder that occurs when some specific nerves from the brain to the eye are damaged or compressed. In most cases, Horner syndrome effects occur on one side of the face. The typical features of Horner syndrome include drooping eyelid ptosis, decreased or pinpoint size of the pupil (the dark portion in the center of the eye). Besides the eye, Horner syndrome effects also include a decreased sensation and diminished sweating on the affected side of the face.

Even though Horner syndrome affects the eye, it is not a disease itself. Whenever Horner syndrome appears, one should suspect injury to certain brain nerves, a stroke, injury to the spinal cord or an accidental injury created during surgery. In a few cases, no cause is ever found. Once Horner syndrome affects the eye, there is no specific treatment. Instead, the management is geared towards finding the cause if possible.

In most cases, adults are affected with Horner syndrome but very rarely a newborn maybe have this syndrome. Even though Horner syndrome is not painful, it is important to see a doctor if you develop a droopy eyelid and have problems with your vision.

The major cause of Horner syndrome in North America is due to either a lung cancer or damage to the nerve during some type of lung surgery in the upper chest. Another very common cause of Horner syndrome today is surgery done for excess sweating. The specific nerves that are affected in Horner syndrome are the sympathetic nerve fibers. Other rare causes of Horner syndrome include stroke, spinal cord injury, Syringomyelia, migraines, trauma to the carotid artery in the neck area or injury during birth.

The diagnosis of Horner syndrome can be made by an astute physician on a physical exam. However, many radiological studies are done to determine the cause. A CT scan or an MRI of the brain, chest, and neck area is always obtained. If a cancer is suspected you will undergo a number of laboratory tests.

There is no specific treatment of Horner syndrome. If the condition was due to nerve damage during surgery, the condition may resolve after a few months. If the condition is due to a cancer then it may be permanent. In cases where no cause is ever found, spontaneous recovery is also possible.

Individuals who have drooping eyelid ptosis or those who have difficulty seeing out of the eye may need to see an eye doctor. Some people are prescribed drops to ensure that the eye does not get dry.

Knowing Horner syndrome facts will hopefully make the public about the disorder and seek early medical help.

The information found here will describe the common condition referred to as myasthenia gravis disease. In this article, we will discuss further information about this disorder including the cause of this disease, the signs and symptoms, along with myasthenia gravis treatment, as well. This condition can affect people of any age, gender, or race; however, it is most common in women under forty years of age and men over sixty. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know concerning this disease and how to treat it, as well.

The cause of this condition is an autoimmune (causing anti-bodies to attack the body rather than protect it) and neurological condition (which affects the nerves). Normally, when the condition is not present, the impulses that the nerves receive are transmitted by releasing acetylcholine, which is the neurotransmitter. The acetylcholine then travels through the nerves to the acetylcholine receptors, which in turn, causes a muscle contraction. However, when this condition is present, antibodies work against the receptors, which prevent the contraction, as well as healthy function of the muscle.

The symptoms of this condition can particularly affect the eye and eyelid movement (ocular myasthenia), and facial. Symptoms of the disorder can include drooping or weakness of the eye or eyelids; blurred or double vision; weakness of the arms, neck, hands, fingers, legs; a changed, sleepy look to the face; shortness of breath and speech impairment, as well.

Myasthenia gravis treatment consists of eye ptosis repair surgery, which repairs the muscles that have slipped inside the eyelid and may involve removing the skin, as well. Blepharoplasty is another surgery, which is commonly performed along with eye ptosis repair surgery to correct this condition.

Blepharoplasty surgery is performed on the upper lid where the excess skin is removed to repair the cosmetic appearance and to restore the functionality of the eye, as well. As with any eye surgery, careful precautions should be made by a trusted surgeon because of the delicate tissue surrounding the eye.

Those suffering from a severe form of this condition might develop excess skin. Many people affected by this disorder also have blocked vision, as well. Moreover, in the case that extra skin is involved, the patient may want or need a brow lift in order to further correct the effects of this disorder. If the droopiness is blocking peripheral vision, it’s important to consult your health insurance provider because your insurance will likely pay for the repair surgery, in this case.

Schedule an appointment with a trusted care provider, who will answer the questions you may have regarding the corrective surgery. Choose a knowledgeable surgeon that will perform the procedure with care. Myasthenia gravis disease is easily treatable with surgery and the proper follow-up care.

Discover more about how myotonic dystrophy symptoms can cause drooping eyelid ptosis. Also, learn more about the eyelid ptosis or blepharoptosis, the causes of drooping eyelids, and the various methods of myotonic dystrophy treatment, as well. In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about these diseases, and some important information about these two conditions, as well.

The disorder known as ptosis of the eye can be caused by many contributing factors including, the condition of myotonic dystrophy, an allergy, botulism, a brain tumor, the onset of diabetes, bell’s palsy or other nerve problems that affect the face, Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic migraine, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), myasthenia gravis, a stroke, a stye, an abscess, an infection caused by bacteria, Cobra venom, eye or orbital tumor, and Horner syndrome. Other causes might also include other sources of nerve damage, aging, and a change in anatomy, recent eye surgery, nerve palsy, or trauma.

Myotonic dystrophy or MD is a form of muscular dystrophy, which is also known as Steinert disease, dystrophia myotonica, and myotonia astrophica, as well. This condition is transmitted through genetics.
The symptoms include weakness of the muscles in the face, hands, neck, and/or feet. This condition spreads throughout the muscle groups in the body. Many times, this intense “muscle weakness” will spread to the heart and other organs, as well. While it is an uncommon condition, this disease can appear at any age, beginning with birth, in any gender, and in any country, as well. This condition cannot be cured and no methods are available for delaying the progression of the disease, either. However, myotonic dystrophy treatment can include the use of physical therapy, ankle and wrist braces, and occupational therapy for loss of strength, and a speech pathologist to control speech, which helps to restore functionality of the muscles and trains the muscles, as well.

Muscular dystrophy is one of the many causes of Ptosis; therefore, both of these conditions are directly related. MD is a continual wasting of the muscles and because Ptosis of the eye refers to weakening of the muscles as a direct result of the nerve endings not properly working, the muscular dystrophy has the ability to cause this drooping eyelid condition. The muscular dystrophy spreads throughout the body, weakening muscles in its path. This condition can commonly affect several of the body’s muscles from working properly, which is primarily what the condition Ptosis is characterized by (weakening of the eye and eyelid muscles, preventing the proper function) Therefore, muscular dystrophy can indirectly cause the droopy eye condition known as Ptosis.

There is informative data, found in these articles, regarding these two diseases. Just remember, it is common for the symptoms of MD to result in a drooping eyelid condition. These two disorders are commonly connected; therefore, we hope you have learned some information about watching for myotonic dystrophy symptoms to prevent a drooping eyelid condition.

There is a lot of information to learn about oculomotor nerve palsy and in this article, we will tell you what you need to know about this condition including, the various types of this condition, oculomotor nerve palsy symptoms and how this disease is one of the main eye ptosis causes, as well. Keep reading to learn more about these two disorders of the eye and how to treat them.

Learn more about how the oculomotor nerves function, and more about the palsy that affects this part of the body, as well. The oculomotor nerve refers to the nerves that are responsible for movement of the eye and the pupillary function. This form of nerve palsy (also known as 3rd cranial nerve palsy) has various symptoms including diplopia, drooping of the eye (or Ptosis), and improper function of the pupil and the eye or eyelid.

The congenital form of this condition referred to as, nerve palsy (oculomotor) is inherited through a person’s genetics. This is a condition that people have inherited and is not caused by any outside factors. The acquired form of nerve palsy, as it relates to oculomotor function is typically caused by diabetes and damage pressure or trauma to nerves. Symptoms of this form of nerve palsy include droopy eyes or eyelids, pain, problems with eye direction, and improper pupil function, as well.

Ptosis in its acquired form (rather than congenital) may be caused by trauma to the oculomotor nerve (also known as, the 3rd cranial nerve), which controls the eyes and eyelids. This trauma or damage that is caused to the nerve may cause droopiness of the eyelid or ptosis. This trauma might also include a head injury resulting in an aneurysm, brain herniation, and occasionally damage caused by TB meningitis, which affects the brain stem.

This form of nerve palsy has symptoms, which include diplopia and ptosis, which is commonly referred to as eye or eyelid drooping. Another sign of this form of palsy, is that upward movement of the eyes is impaired and the eye might slightly rotate, when looking downward. Other symptoms include dilated pupils (which may be one of the first warning signs of this condition), a severe headache (which might suggest an aneurysm that may have ruptured), or the pupil becomes unresponsive (which might suggest possible herniation) or other problems affecting the pupil including its function in response to light, or it’s absence, as well. If any of these signs and symptoms are present, contact a doctor, right away because they might have to perform an emergency CT scan or MRI, in certain cases.

This condition may indirectly cause drooping eyelids; therefore, it is important to be aware of the causes and the symptoms of this condition. Watch for the signs and symptoms of Oculomotor nerve palsy, as a means of preventing drooping eyelids (or Ptosis).

Many people are searching for the best eye ptosis treatment. While surgery is widely performed for this disorder, the results are not always perfect. Moreover, surgery for ptosis is very expensive. Therefore the question is, “are there any eye ptosis treatments which do not involve surgery?” the answer is yes. There are a few non-surgical treatments, but the efficacy of these treatments is questionable. In fact, none of the available non-surgical drooping eyelid treatments have ever been validated in proper clinical trials. There are some creams that contain retin A and collagen which are said to tighten the muscles of the eyelids and reduce ptosis. In fact, most of these creams are a waste of money.

Over the years various types of transparent sticky tapes and glues have been developed to treat ptosis but every one of these products has failed to live up to expectations. One buys these transparent eye strips and places then over the eyelid. This is not a new discovery at all and many such tapes are available on the market.

The question is do these strips work? Most people claim that eye sticky strips are a fraud and the strips do not stick on the eyelid for more than a few minutes. Moreover, the airstrips easily fall off. The strips are also difficult to attach to oily and wet skin. Moreover, one is unable to blink the eye for the rest of the day. By keeping eye in a “stare mode” all day, the eye also becomes dry, red and is cosmetically unappealing. The eyelids sticky tapes cost about $30 for a few weeks supply.

There are also some scleral contact lenses that one can wear to reduce ptosis. However, scleral contact lenses are expensive, can be uncomfortable and do not always work.

The best non-surgical drooping eyelid treatment is Botox. Botox injections are not painful and the results are immediate. However, Botox is only a short-term solution and it can be expensive. Finally, there are too many people performing Botox injections. While some spas and salons use aseptic techniques, the majority of workers who apply Botox are not health care professionals. Most of these individuals have no concept of sterility and often reuse the needle. There have also been many instances where both health professionals and others have used fake or diluted Botox to get more bang for the buck. Therefore, in the end, yes, Botox is the best drooping eyelid treatment, but it is vital to go to a reputable professional for your injections. Spas may be cheaper for Botox injections but you never know who is doing the injections and when your eyes are concerned, you want to be sure.

Just like there is no non-surgical treatment for sagging breasts (except for a bra), there is no great permanent non-surgical eye ptosis treatment.

Keep reading to discover more information about eye ptosis congenital including the characteristics of this disease, as well as, information about the causes, symptoms, and treatments, too. This condition is a common disorder that affects the eye, eyelid, and in advanced cases, it can affect the vision. In this article, we will tell you how you can take measures to repair this condition, as well.

There are two various forms of this dropping eyelid condition. One type that may be acquired at birth, which is referred to as congenital. The other type of ptosis can be the result of varying causes and factors, including head trauma. This secondary form is referred to as acquired ptosis because it is acquired later in life and is not a condition, one is born with. In this article, we will discuss primarily the acquired form of this condition.

Drooping eyelid (or ptosis) is a condition that affects the muscles found in the eyelid and eye, as well. This condition is a result of lack of nerve communication being sent to the receptors as a result of antibodies needlessly attacking and eliminating the neurotransmitter. This droopy eyelid condition causes the eyes to droop and can occur in one or both eyelids and can with or without symmetry, as well. In more severe cases, the eyelid can cover the entire pupil, resulting in an obstruction of vision. This dropping eyelid condition can occur in any age group and affects both adults and children, as well. Causes of the congenital form of this condition include complications of cataract surgery or other surgeries of the eye, injury of the eye, aging, diabetes, eye tumor, or neurological problems, as well.

There are various signs and symptoms to be aware when concerning this condition of the eye. The primary symptom that affects everyone with this disease is excessive drooping of the eyelid. The severity of the condition is measured by the level of droopiness of the eyelid and whether this symptom prevents the person, affected from seeing properly. This condition is not to be confused with Dermatochalasis, which results in excess skin overlapping the eye to prevent total vision. Other symptoms of this condition include eye fatigue, irritation of the eye or eyelid, crossed eyes, difficulty in eye movement, double vision, blurred vision, or other vision related problems, as well.

Eye ptosis repair consists of eye surgery to correct the condition. Eye ptosis repair surgery or Blepharoplasty requires the surgeon to tighten the levator muscles (which have loosened as a result of the condition), which helps to promote better vision, as well as, to improve cosmetic appearance. A trusted surgeon and care provider should be selected for Blepharoplasty surgery.
